How Much Do Family Portraits Cost in Eden Prairie? (And What You’re Really Investing In)

This is one of the first questions I hear:
“Bob, how much do family portraits cost?”
It’s a fair question. You’re busy, you have a budget, and you don’t want any surprises.
So let me walk you through exactly how family portrait pricing works here at Dale Studios in Eden Prairie—and, more importantly, what you actually get for your investment.

The Short Answer: What Most Families Invest
At Dale Studios, your investment has two parts:
  1. In-Studio Session Fee:
Most family sessions have a session fee between $200–$300.
This covers the planning, photographing, and preparation of your images.
  2. Finished Portrait Artwork:
After the session, most families invest between $1,200 and $4,800 in finished artwork for their home—wall portraits, wall collections, and grandparent gift prints.
If you’re a “just give me the numbers” person, that’s the quick version.
But if you’re wondering why there’s a range… and what families actually get for that investment… that’s where my 40+ years of experience really come in.

What Your Session Fee Really Buys You
Your $200–$300 in-studio session fee is not just “time in front of the camera.” It includes:
  • Planning & Consultation
We talk before you come in—what room you want to decorate, what clothing will look best, how large your family is, and which groupings are most important to you (whole family, kids together, grandparents, etc.).
  • Guided Studio Session
With over 40 years of photographing children, teens, parents, and grandparents, I don’t expect you to know how to pose. I guide every member of the family so everyone looks their best—natural, relaxed, and connected.
  • Multiple Groupings
In one session, we might create:
    • The main family portrait
    • Kids together
    • Parents together
    • Grandparents with grandkids
    • Any special combinations that matter to your story
  • Image Selection & Design Appointment
After the session, you’ll come back to the studio to view your images on a large screen. I’ll help you narrow down favorites, choose sizes, and design wall portraits and collections that actually fit your walls and your budget.
The session fee covers the creative work, time, and expertise that go into crafting images you’ll be proud to display for decades.

What Families Actually Buy: Real-World Examples
To make this practical, here are a few real-world style scenarios (names changed, emotions very real).
The “Centerpiece Wall Portrait” Family
Typical Investment: Around $1,200–$1,800
A young family of four comes in wanting one beautiful statement portrait for the living room and some smaller prints.
They might choose:
  • One large wall portrait (over the sofa or fireplace)
  • A few gift prints (8x10s or 5x7s) for grandparents
Because large wall portraits start at $795, by the time we’ve added framing and a small handful of gift prints, their total investment often lands in the $1,200–$1,800 range.
They leave with one powerful piece that becomes the daily reminder of “this is us, in this season.”

The “Wall Collection + Grandparents” Family
Typical Investment: Around $2,000–$3,500
Another family comes in with three kids and nearby grandparents. They want more than one image—something that shows personality and relationships.
They might choose:
  • A multi-image wall collection for a main wall (for example, three or five coordinating portraits)
  • A second, smaller piece for a hallway or staircase
  • Gift portraits for both sets of grandparents
A custom wall collection plus several framed smaller pieces quickly adds up to a $2,000–$3,500 investment.
For this family, the portraits become part of the home—walked past daily, talked about often, and remembered long after the kids have grown and moved out.

The “Legacy Session” With Three Generations
Typical Investment: Around $3,500–$4,800
This is the session where the adult children finally convince their parents (the grandparents) to get everyone together before health, distance, or time makes it harder.
They might choose:
  • One large, formal three-generation portrait as the main piece
  • A collection of smaller portraits: just the grandparents, just the grandkids, sibling groupings
  • Wall art for multiple households: one for each adult child’s home and one for the grandparents
  • A small album or additional gift prints for extended family
It’s not unusual for these families to invest $3,500–$4,800 by the time everyone has the pieces they want.
These are the sessions that, 10… 20… 30 years from now, get pointed at and talked about by future generations:
“Look, that’s when Grandma could still get down on the floor with us,” or
“That was before we lost Grandpa; I’m so glad we did this.”

Why Wall Portraits Start at $795
You’ll see this number in my pricing:
Large wall portraits start at $795.
That price reflects:
  • Archival materials designed to last for decades
  • Professional retouching that’s flattering but still looks like you
  • The time spent to photograph, edit, and design the piece
  • The skill of making sure the portrait looks right from across the room and up close
When you hang a portrait over your sofa or fireplace, it becomes part of your daily life. It needs to be designed to hold up to time, light, and changing trends.
This is the difference between a quick, inexpensive print and something your kids will one day fight over when it’s time to “divide up the family portraits.”

What About Digital Files?
Yes, I do offer digital files, but they’re structured to support your artwork—not replace it.
  • Digital files are available with certain purchases
  • They are often included or discounted when your order is over $2,500
  • They can be added as upgrades to selected wall portraits or collections
Why? Because a file on a hard drive doesn’t tell your story the way a large portrait over the fireplace does.
We’ve all seen what happens to “I’ll print these someday” images—they disappear into folders and phones. The printed pieces we walk past every day are the ones that become part of our family’s identity.

Can We Work Within a Budget?
Absolutely.
Not every family is going to invest $4,000. Some do; many don’t.
My goal is to help you:
  • Prioritize the most important piece(s)
  • Choose sizes that make sense for your home
  • Take advantage of payment plans or split payments when needed
For larger orders, we can spread payments out so it’s comfortable while still letting you create the artwork you truly want.

Why Professional Portraits Cost More Than Chain Studios
You might be wondering:
“Why is this more expensive than the quick studio at the mall or a shoot-and-burn photographer?”
Here’s the honest answer.
  • I’ve spent over 40 years working with every age and personality—from wiggly toddlers to camera-shy teenagers to grandparents with mobility challenges.
  • I’ve seen firsthand how fast time evaporates. Families come back years later and say, “I can’t believe how little they were in that portrait,” or “I’m so glad we did this before Dad got sick.”
  • Every photograph we treasure from 50 or even 100 years ago tells a story: the clothes, the expressions, the relationships. My job is to create that kind of image for your family today—so that, decades from now, your children and grandchildren will have that same experience.
You’re not just paying for paper and ink. You’re investing in a piece of your family history that gets to exist outside of your phone.
And I back it with a simple promise:
You must be happy with your portraits, or your money back.
If you’re not thrilled, we’ll make it right—reshoot, reprint, or refund. That’s how strongly I feel about what we’re creating together.

So… Is It Worth It?
Only you can decide what your family memories are worth.
My role is to make sure that if you choose to invest in a professional family portrait, you get:
  • A guided, low-stress experience
  • Artwork that actually fits your home and lifestyle
  • Portraits that still matter 40 years from now, not just this year’s holiday card
If you’re wondering whether now is the right time, here’s what I can tell you after four decades behind the camera:
Kids don’t stay little. Parents don’t stay the same. Grandparents don’t stay forever.
Time evaporates—but a portrait, done well, doesn’t.

Ready to Talk About Your Family’s Portraits?
If you’re curious, the best next step is a quick conversation.
We’ll talk about:
  • Who’s in your family
  • Where you’d love to see a portrait in your home
  • What kind of investment feels comfortable for you
From there, I can give you a more precise estimate and help you decide if now is the time to capture your family story.
You don’t have to commit to anything to start the conversation. But you might be very glad, years from now, that you did.  Call me today at 952-400-1020 and let's get started
