Family portraits are a very important part of our heritage from any Minnesota family portrait photography studio because they preserve history, record family growth and document changing styles. Portraits from Minnesota photographers have a way of calling out to us, garnering our immediate attention whenever we enter a room. For these various reasons, amongst many other reasons, family portraits continue to be so popular.
While almost all of these photographs get looked at, only a few of them spark the phrase, "That's a good picture!" This is because the posing strategies and selections of photographers play a big role. Minnesota photographers tend to get into ruts taking the same styles of portraits over and over. If you are a photographer and find that this is happening to you, then it is time to look at some of these new ideas about posing families:
Keep things simple. Nobody wants to see stiff family portraits where everyone is in exactly the same pose every time. Those poses that are more natural-looking are what give that noteworthy appearance. So, let the family members be themselves and encourage them to laugh and smile naturally. Your job is to keep your eye behind the lens, always looking for an opportune shot.
You need to get creative. All this takes is your imagination and some props or natural settings to capture some truly unique moments. For instance, you could place a baby in a bassinet with the siblings and parents looking at the baby instead of at the camera. Fabulous family portraits can also be created with the family gathered around a fence or on the front porch sipping lemonade.
While there is a time and a place to use your tripod, it may not be during a family portrait photo session. If you feel your posing is getting stale, get rid of the tripod, try alternate angles and experiment with lighting.
Whenever you break down the barriers that squelch your creativity, you actually free yourself to produce your best work yet. You will also find that you enjoy the portrait sessions more and your clients will also be thrilled with the final results.
