Just go on with your hobby as a digital photographer, for you to get noticed, try putting your work online so people can comment on it and that can help to make your work better, also online communities or groups that focuses on digital photography can help you with your quest, they provide insights, do’s and don’t s in Digital Photography.
Try Picasa or flicker they are free sites to store your Photos and people that view your Photos can comment constructively.

Join betterphoto.com. It’s free. They have contests, forums, and clubs that you can participate in. You can have your own gallery that others can view and comment on… you can do the same for others.
There are classes, too… but those aren’t free… ; ) (But they are WELL worth it for building your skills!!)
Yes, there are two paths you can go on, but in the long run:
Your stairway lies on either Commercial or Art.
Commercial: go to college and get a Diploma.
Art: be happy, fulfilled, and dirt poor.

Serious: I like flickr because of it’s tag-system that creates great micro-communities with special interests. You might be noticed if you’re great. (Or if you post pictures of half-naked students.)
