"...I'll do practically anything in the field"

Yet you won't pay money to join orginizations? Yes, I know they are expencive (I pay almost $1500 / year for my various organizations). But some will set you up with apprenticeships. They will also provide great training on a professional level.

You can also look into books. Amherst Media (www.amherstmedia.com) provides a multitude of books to help pro and amateur photographers. And they aren't too overly priced.

Are there any photographers around you? Just get some never go up to them and tell them you want to help. Even if it's just lugging around their equipment or even holding lights for them while they are on location. Volunteer your time if you have to. Be agressive also (but not overly agressive). If someone says they can't afford to have another person, say you'll do it for free. It takes persistance.

Organize your absolute best work in a portfolio you can show when you go on an interview.
Volunteer to take pictures at a local church's summer bible school or some other community activity.
Keep a camera with you at all times. When the right shot falls in your lap, you need to be ready.
If you're at an interesting event, take some shots and submit them to your local paper. Don't overlook the weekly community papers. They are often looking for content.
Download the user's manual for your SLR and figure out how to use every feature.
Good luck.

Sounds like you need to take some photo classes before someone will look at you.
