Individuals who take photographs are referred to as photographers. Not all photographers are the same. In terms of skill level, there are amateur photographers and professional photographers. There are also hobbyist photographers, people who take pictures for fun or enjoyment.
Professional photographers, those who make a living or career from taking pictures, have specializations too. For instance, there are photographers who specialize in wedding photography and portrait photography, and there are those who are involved in different photography styles such as commercial photography, fine art photography and documentary photography
Photographers and their Equipment
For professional photographers, their line of work often determines their choice in camera equipment. For instance, photographers who work in the fashion or modeling industry rely mostly on the 35mm film SLR camera, which doesn’t have any delay when taking photos of moving subjects (models) in succession.
Many portrait photographers today prefer digital SLR cameras, which are capable of taking quality prints and enabling them to provide customers with instant print proofs to choose their desired photos for developing into portraits.
As for wedding photographers, they, too are turning digital, ditching film cameras for digital SLR cameras. While the high-end digital cameras for wedding photography are rather expensive, the quality of the pictures they are capable of producing is simply amazing. Digital SLR cameras, just like the 35mm SLR cameras, have interchangeable lenses for close ups and zooms, as well as lens for panoramic effects.
These cameras are also ideal for photographing in outdoor areas since they are lightweight and easy to handle. For wedding photographers, a digital SLR camera can make it possible to create picture perfect wedding photographs. Because they come with so many automated controls, photographers can spend more time focusing on their subjects and designing the perfect wedding photographs instead of messing around with the controls.
Photographers and the Different Photography Styles
There are many photography styles, including commercial photography, fine art photography and documentary photography.
Perhaps the most common form of commercial photography is advertising photography. Advertising photography is all around us, and advertising photographers are involved in taking and designing photos to sell a product or service. Advertising photography are typically undertaken by advertising agencies, design firms or in-house corporate design teams.
Another style of commercial photography is fashion and glamour photography, with clothes or products being the focus of fashion photography, and the model being the focus of glamour photography.
Other styles of commercial photography are crime scene photography (crime scenes are photographed using a black-and-white camera or an infrared camera); editorial photography (photos are used to accompany a news or magazine story); fine art photography (photographs taken based on a vision); landscape photography (photos of different locations and are sold as postcards or other souvenirs); and wildlife photography.
Photo Sources
Companies that need photography often hire a professional photographer to shoot their pictures. “A popular trend nowadays for those who need photos for commercial or personal use is to get rights to stock photographs from places like Corbis and Getty Images” says professional digital photographer Bob Dale. These places have made it possible for both amateur and professional photographers alike to make money from their photos.
Photography for Amateurs
Digital cameras have made it even easier for many people to dabble in photography. Novice photographers today have a plethora of digital cameras from which they can choose. There are cheap mini digital cameras available, small enough they fit in your pocket and allow you to snap pictures whenever you want.
If you want more features, there are mid-range and top-of-the-line digital SLR cameras. There’s basically a digital camera out there for every taste, style and budget.
Photography for All
Whether you’re a professional or an amateur photographer, today is an exciting time to be in the world of photography. Advances in digital technology are happening quickly, it’s sometimes difficult to keep abreast of all the newest changes. For photographers, this means new cameras with better and more features coming out every year, and with the competition among companies like Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fuji and others, digital cameras are becoming more and more affordable.
